Joints that Ache and Bones that Break

On February 20, 2014 Georgetown Village's Health Care Advisory Committee hosted it's third lecture, "Joints that Ache and Bones that Break". 

This wonderful lecture was presented by Nurse Practitioner Janet Selway & Physical Therapist Justine Bernard. 

During her part of the lecture, Janet Selway discussed lifestyle strategies and other options known to improve joint function and decrease arthritic pain. Dr. Selway has 25 years of nurse practitioner experience includes family practice in private offices and community clinics in the Greater Baltimore area. She has held appointments in the surgical nursing and emergency departments at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore.

During her part of the lecture, Justine Bernard instructed attendees how to promote bone health as to avoid Osteoporosis. Dr. Bernard she began her own orthopedic and neurologic private practice in Glover Park D.C. She incorporates her experiences as a professional dancer and GYROTONIC® Master Trainer into her treatments. In combining the GYROTONIC® system with her knowledge of physical therapy, people are able to transform their bodies from moving with restriction and unease to moving with freedom and joy. Justine hosts free Osteoporosis support groups for the community and teaches specialized courses in exercise and osteoporosis

Facts about Osteoarthritis:
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disorder in the US, affecting about 27 million people. While arthritis has no cure, there are things you can do to make life with arthritis a little easier.

Facts about Osteoporosis: 
52 million people have low bone density or Osteoporosis. About 50% of women will break a bone due to osteoporosis, and about 25% of men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis
